ILE
Words terminating in ile with the accent on the penultimate have the final i short generally; as hostile (hosttl,. The following are exceptions : edile, exile, gentile, pensile, profile. When the accent is on the antepenultimate the same rule generally holds good; as in juvenile, puerile: exceptions—camomile, reconcile. Both sounds, however, form passable rhymes. In reading poetry, it is advisable to give the long sound to i in all such words, except when rhyme demands the short one; e.g. " fertile vales," wind for wind. |
